Fall Break, Exploring Southern Tunisia - Exploring Tataouine, Oct, 2014

Exploring Tataouine, Tunisia

Bits from Wikipedia:
"Tataouine (Arabicتطاوين‎ Taṭāwīn), also transliterated as Tatooine ... from the Berber Tittawin, literally meaning Eyes.  The below ground, "cave dwellings" of the native Berber population, designed for coolness and protection, render the city and the area around it a tourist and film makers attraction.
The district is famous for its ksour (fortified Berber granaries) including the picturesque Ksar Ouled SoltaneChenini and Douiret. These abandoned settlements feature vaulted adobe buildings, or ghorfas
Tataouine's name became famous when George Lucas, who filmed the original Star Wars film in various locations of Tunisia (for example, the Lars Homestead, filmed at the Hotel Sidi Driss in Matmata), named Luke Skywalker's fictional home planet Tatooine.
Tataouine appeared in the end of the movie The X-Files as Foum Tataouine, where an extraterrestrial viral experiment facility was held."

Just 30 minutes or so away from our cave hotel in Douiret, was the small town of Tataouine.  We had read in the guide books that the hotel in town was a great place to start our explorations of the area.  This is definitely a tourist destination although there are not many tourists around.

Lovely old pots.

Lots of various rooms, all kept cool in the
summer because of the thick walls
and the cave-like atmosphere.

Would this not make a great pub???

I liked their unique art.

The restaurant, with great views, just waiting for the tourists to arrive.
