Last night in Douiret
After a full day of exploring the ancient hillside villages, we headed back to our cave hotel in Douiret. Everyone was tired, so most showered and napped but I had not quite had enough of exploring so I wandered along the hill. This village used to be quite large with a couple thousand people who lived here. I was alone, it was early in the evening and the caves in the hills just begged to be explored.

I am just not ready to stop exploring. This is such an amazing area! |
|
So scenic. And so quiet. |
|
Little cave homes. All abandoned. |
I checked out a couple of caves as I wandered along the hillside. Then I realized I was out here alone, everyone else was napping, and if someone was hiding in one of these caves and wanted to do me harm, no one could hear or see me... So I headed back closer to the hotel.

An ancient olive press in a cave room. |
|
A room where they probably stored grain. |
I found a wonderful place to take some scenic shots and there was an old pot that just happened to be perched on the rock wall. Obviously someone before me was taking photos too?
I took many photos in various angles, bending down, moving around, looking at different views from different heights. At least one of these if frame-worthy I think!
I felt something hard beneath my shoe when I was bending forward to take another photo. I dug just under the ground and found an old key!
My vase/wall/scenic shots while practicing various angels:

What a souvenir!!! |
I headed back to the room to freshen up and then to join the others for our last evening here.
|
He wanted to join me in the shower. |
|
Probably another evening of couscous. We ate A LOT of couscous! |
|
Our new friend, Michael was still game to hang out with us, despite the long day. Really nice fellow! |
The next morning, we packed up and headed out towards the coast, towards El Jem and Mahdia.
|
Time to pack the cars and head out. |
|
Goodbye Beautiful Douiret! |
